Betterway Africa International (BAI) is a non-profit organization established on 8 September 2009 in Cameroon. BAI is dedicated to:
The monitoring, documentation and dissemination of policy and operational knowledge for enhanced and innovative actions for development in underserved communities, with a focus on women and girls;
Advocacy and action for strategic capacity-building for empowerment and development in under-served community organizations in Cameroon and Africa, with a focus on the empowerment of women and girls;
The promotion of a more informed and sustainable use of local assets, knowledge and skills in the development process, and;
The promotion of national and international partnerships for innovation in development in underserved communities.
We pursue a hands-on practical approach to innovation, and devoted our start-up years to feasibility studies and small pilot projects in Ngie-Subdivision in the North West Region of Cameroon. This has been to demonstrate the feasibility of innovation in fringe communities with their full participation and ownership, with joint action brining together local government and service authorities, women and community leaders and traditional authorities. They work together from the outset to interrogate past practices and the status quo, and to initiate and drive innovation through enhanced collective understanding and awareness about the hidden development potential in the community. Gender assessments are conducted at the conceptual phases of our activities, to help determine the need for tailored or complementary activities addressing specific concerns and questions for women and girls. We also prioritize women-led activities as demonstration or pilot projects.
